While Mpho’s 5th birthday should have been a joyous occasion, there was a cloud hanging over his family home as he had been diagnosed with leukaemia less than two weeks before. 3 years later, Mpho is celebrating his 8th birthday, though he is still receiving treatment. But he doesn’t let that get in the way of his dreams of becoming a pilot one day so that he can fly high in the sky.
Cupcakes of Hope provided help for the family in the form of money to buy food and pay for transport to and from hospital for treatment. They also helped give Mpho a memorable birthday party with lots of gifts.
The journey has taken a toll on the entire Molekwa family. They’ve been there while Mpho was missing school, dropping weight and even losing his hair. But he still finds ways to stay positive. Like any other 8 year old, he absolutely loves fast cars, soccer and tasty home cooked meals like lamb stew.
Mpho’s mom, Boitumelo, stresses the importance of observing children when they are sick as it is always better to detect illness in the early stages.
