Our Sustainability Efforts

Single-use items like plastic straws cause some of the worst damage to our fragile ecosystems. These straws offer us a few moments of convenience and comfort while we’re sipping on our favourite cold drinks, but they stick around as pollution for many years to come after those few moments. That’s why we did away with all plastic straws in 2018 and replaced them with eco-friendly straws. Now you can sip more and more while also helping preserve our perfect planet.

It’s estimated that about 2 billion cups of coffee are consumed around the world every single day. It’s safe to say that millions and millions of takeaway coffee cups are also used every day. But here’s the thing: the vast majority of takeaway coffee cups are not recyclable, even though they’re made of paper. Most paper coffee cups are lined with a thin layer of plastic, which prevents your coffee from leaking out the bottom. Sadly, it also makes cups non-recyclable.

Our takeaway coffee cups are different. Ours are 100% biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable.

2019 was also the year we first introduced our reusable Travel Mugg and started offering our customers a R5 discount on their hot drink when they brought their reusable Mugg along with them.

2020 was the year we all started ordering online, and we very quickly realised that we needed to do more to offer more sustainable takeaways. So, we took stock of our packaging and started removing virgin plastics in favour of friendlier alternatives. Now you can enjoy your favourite M&B meal anywhere, with the peace of mind that the container it comes in can be widely recycled.

Our Travel Mugg started making its way around SA back in 2019. In 2021 we decided to offer the R5 off any hot drink to anybody with any reusable coffee cup, and not only those using our Travel Mugg. By doing this, we hope to encourage more and more people to start using reusable coffee cups. Of course, we recommend our Travel Mugg above others because it’s made from sustainable and natural bamboo rather than plastic, metal or glass.

Our takeaway coffee cups are 100% recyclable. When you order your favourite hot drink at M&B On-The-Move, you now have a choice between a black lid or a white lid. The black lid is made of fully-recyclable plastic, but the new white lid is actually made of paper fibres, so it’s not only recyclable, but biodegradable and compostable too. The choice is yours, and we encourage you to make the choice that’s better for your enjoyment, as well as the planet.
