We’re always looking for ways to do more when it comes to reducing our environmental footprint. So we, like most food and drink companies, have started following the global trend of serving paper straws.
Since then we have received numerous requests to reintroduce plastic straws, but we are dedicated to making a difference, which is why we’re sticking to paper straws. That being said, we do realise that paper straws need to be perfected and we have also dedicated ourselves to finding a solution that works for both our customers and the environment.
Until that time comes, there are viable alternatives to paper straws, like metal straws, which can be purchased online or at reputable retailers. These reusable straws work just as well as their plastic counter parts, are best practice when it comes to being environmentally friendly and even come with hassle-free cleaning kits.
Either way, we should always keep in mind why it’s important to find an alternative to plastic straws.
In essence, plastic isn’t biodegradable, which makes it hazardous to the environment.
Currently every square kilometre of every ocean contains about 18 000 pieces of plastic and a plastic island the size of Mexico was discovered in the Pacific. This is endangering many species found in the oceans and if we continue using plastic at this rate, it will lead to the extinction of all ocean life.
Fact is, if we don’t act now it will be too late and the results will have a devastating impact on the quality of life of our children and the generations that follow.
Considering that over a billion plastic straws are used daily, the positive impact we can make by not using them becomes clear.
It’s true that paper straws need to be perfected, but they are a step in the right direction. One towards creating a better and more sustainable future.
