ARMAAN’S JOURNEY TO REMISSION

Armaan is a super trooper 8 year old who celebrated the start of his remission in May 2022 after beating Hodgkin’s lymphoma. When a cancer patient completes their treatment, it’s tradition that they get to celebrate by ringing a bell in the oncology ward. You can help kids like Armaan reach the milestone of their bell-ringing ceremony just by ordering your favourite Giant Muffin at your local M&B. Every time you do, we donate to Cupcakes of Hope, so that they can keep on supporting kids like Armaan.

ARMAAN’S LYMPHOMA WARNING SIGNS

During the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown, Armaan’s mom, Imaan, noticed that he had some swelling on his neck. When the swelling wouldn’t go away, they visited a GP. Unfortunately, the swelling was written off as nothing more than an allergic reaction and the doctors assured Imaan over and over again that it would get better and that there was nothing to worry about.

As time went on, Armaan started complaining about feeling nauseous almost constantly. They sought the opinion of a paediatrician, who ran tests and consulted with a radiologist too. That’s when Armaan was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a type of cancer that affects the immune system, and started his chemotherapy treatment.

Imaan spoke more about the early warning signs of childhood cancer, mentioning that in retrospect there were a few signs they missed. The truth is, when symptoms start appearing, parents don’t always immediately assume the worst case. Some symptoms of childhood cancer can be very similar to the symptoms of a mild allergy, such as sweating, skin rashes, and nausea.

Knowing these early warning signs is important for parents, so that when two or three of them start appearing you can detect any problems early on. Above all, Imaan advises parents to trust their instincts, because nobody knows your child better than you do.

MORE AND MORE INSPIRING MOMENTS

When you’re fighting cancer, like Armaan and his family, staying positive isn’t always easy. Thankfully, the hard workers from Cupcakes of Hope, affectionately referred to as Cupcake Angels, were always there to brighten their days.

Imaan recalls one day when she and Armaan were at the oncologists’ offices. Suddenly, there was a commotion and shouts of joy from all the brave kids as one of the Cupcake Angels entered dressed in her pink t-shirt and carrying armfuls of presents for the kids, almost like a “pink Santa Claus”. Seeing how the spirits in the room lifted within seconds was a beautiful moment.

Above all, it’s the resilience of the kids who are going through similar battles that fills Imaan with hope.
